Opened
to the public in July 2001, Blackwell is one of Britain's most important
houses. It is a rare example of the Arts and Crafts Movement with
wonderfully rich interiors that have survived almost entirely intact.
Downstairs, displays of period furniture, objects and works of art
complement the stunning original decoration; while upstairs there
are changing exhibitions of the best contemporary and historical
applied arts and crafts.
Designed by M H Baillie Scott between 1898 and 1900, Blackwell is
an enormously important example of Arts and Crafts Movement architecture.
The house stands high above Windermere looking across the lake to
the Coniston fells. |
