October half term Creative Kids

Date: 19 – 27 October 2019

Find heaps of entertainment and fun for all the family this half-term with activities, colour and creativity happening across our four different attractions, including a Halloween themed session at the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry.


Each attraction has a varied program of activities from craft and creative workshops, book readings and signings, to costume making and a hands-on animation class. Learn more below about what’s on at the Museum below.

Creepy Costume Making

Location: Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry
Date: 21 October and 22 October, 11.00am - 4.00pm
Price: £10 per child

Spend a spooktacular day at the Museum learning how to use a sewing machine to create your very own Dracula cape, or use recycled card and paper. Then, in full costume and face paint prepare to listen to a super scary spooky story!

Ideal for children aged 7+. Children will be using sharp scissors and listening to ghost stories, parent’s discretion advised.

There are only 12 child places available. Parents may join in.

Doodle Days

Location: Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry

Find Postcards and pens across our attractions to draw out the artist within you, pick up a postcard and doodle away. Share your creativity with us on social media.

Activities at Abbot Hall Art Gallery
Art Studio

Location: Abbot Hall Art Gallery

Dates and times: Daily

Price: FREE with admission

Located off the galleries, the Art Studio is free to use and filled with art supplies for families to get creative. Be inspired by the big winter art exhibition: Colour and Light: The Art and Influence of the Scottish Colourists – Highlights from the Fleming Collection which features colourful masterpieces from the renowned collection of Scottish art.

 

CLIMArt Camp

Location: Abbot Hall Art Gallery

Dates and times: 23 – 25 October, 10am – 3pm

Price: FREE

A three-day workshop for young people aged 10-15. They can take part in a series of exciting activities with artist Kat Loudon. March out to the next climate protest with banners, placards and more. Click here to sign up and for more information. Booking essential.

 

 

Activities at Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts House
Make a Change

Location: Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts House

Dates and times: 26 October, 11.00am – 3.00pm

Price: FREE with admission

Learn how you can use Arts & Crafts to make a statement about the issues that matter to you, whether that’s the environment, equality, animal cruelty, bullying or something else. See how the masters of Arts & Crafts and political thinkers expressed their viewpoints and create your own banners or poster to make your voice heard.

 

Great Detective Challenge

Location: Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts House

Dates and times: 19 – 27 October, all day

Price: FREE with admission

Take part in the Great Detective Challenge! Don your deerstalker hat and magnifying glass and become a detective for the day. If you find all the clues around the house you’ll get a prize and free cake!

Our immersive experience for little ones will intrigue, delight and let imaginations run wild in our multi-sensory forest of play. Perfect for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

 

Activities at Windermere Jetty

The Legend of the Ferryman

Crier of Claife Heights (paper workshop)

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: 20 and 27 October, 10.30am – 3.30pm (drop-in)

Price: FREE with admission

For children of all ages. Join us in our Learning Centre to hear the local folk legend of The Ferryman and The Crier of Claife. Use the story as your inspiration to create a paper silhouette. Create a puppet of your favourite spooky character and retell the story in your own words.

 

Nature’s Winter Workshops

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: 21-25 October, each day at 2pm

Price: FREE with admission

Help us shape the story of weather for our upcoming exhibition. Add your own stories of weather. How does it affect your life? Join our creative workshops and let your imagination soar. All contributions will be included in the exhibition.

 

Create Your Own Animation

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: 22 October, 12.30 – 4.30pm

Price: £10

Exciting half-day animation workshop led by local artist Eleanor Chaney. Explore the theme of extreme weather. Create stop-motion animation, use artistic paper silhouettes, watercolour painting and lightbox sand art to create dramatic, atmospheric animations. Ideal for children aged 8-14.

 

Jim and Slim’s First Adventure

(book reading and signing)

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: 23 October, 12 noon and 3pm

Price: FREE with admission

Local author June Jennings reads from her wonderful pirate adventure story Jim and Slim’s First Adventure in our atmospheric Boathouse. Afterwards, meet the author, buy a book and get it signed.

 

Jetty Gems

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: Daily, 1.45pm

Price: FREE with admission

Our experts reveal a gem from our collection and share the story behind it in this 5 – 10 minute talk.

 

Codebreaker

Location: Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Dates and times: Daily

Price: FREE with admission

Youngsters can also explore the museum galleries and search for clues as part of a Jetty Codebreaker game. Children need to uncover answers around the museum and the use the nautical flag alphabet to crack a code.
