A view of Stramongate in Kendal. This street was the first in the country to be macadamised - coated in hard-core of broken rock. The process is still used today but combined with tar and called tarmac. This street has changed a great deal since this photograph was taken - a new road has been put in that cuts across the street for the one way system.
